There are a few things that we can count on at the beginning of a new year – cold weather, the end-of-holiday work rush, and, unfortunately, an influx of New Year weight-loss messaging. Navigating eating disorder recovery while constantly being bombarded with unhealthy diet trends can be tricky and difficult. Let’s discuss four methods for staying focused on eating disorder recovery in the midst of this.
1: Set 2025 Goals (that aren’t related to weight)
Give yourself something else to focus on, so you cannot think about fad diets or weight loss trends. We recommend setting goals that have nothing to do with health, fitness, or food – you can make these as fun or random as you would like. Set a goal related to creativity; have you ever wanted to try knitting, writing, or gardening? Maybe focus on your friendships and set a goal to reach out to one new connection per week. We also like to suggest volunteering (find a cause you’re passionate about!) and decluttering (could you set a goal to get rid of 5 pieces of clothing that you never wear?). There are so many options for goals that have nothing to do with fitness or food.
2: Lean On Your Support Team
Be honest with your support individuals – tell them what you feel your triggers may be and ask them to keep you accountable in your recovery journey. Make sure you are open to receiving encouragement, from others and yourself. Do not be afraid to ask for help, specifically from the professionals on your support team.
3: Prioritize Self-Care
And yes, this means stop scrolling. Get off of social media and engage in hobbies – try reading, going for a walk, stretching, knitting. Try a new face mask, journal, or call a friend. Focus on what makes you feel good – this may even be a good time to engage in a resolution that you set.
4: Reflect + Recommit
Consider how far you have come in your recovery journey; what have you accomplished that you’re proud of? Journal about your progress, and recommit to yourself. It can be helpful to consider your inner child, and what they would do. What would you want someone to say to your inner child? How can you recommit to that person? Reminding yourself of all you have worked for can provide intrinsic motivation to keep going on your recovery journey.
