Food Sustainability

Grow your own food!

  • Try herbs and other easy to grow produce to put on your windowsill or back porch.
    • Herbs, tomatoes, and peppers are easy to grow. Just keep the soil moist!
    • Just try one thing, you don’t need to start a farm!

Growing your food is a huge way to eat mindfully.

Growing your own food increases your sense of appreciation for the food.

The food tastes better.

You naturally want to savor the food for longer (therefore you eat less).

Buy your food locally

  • Purchase your produce at local farmers markets.
    • Food here is usually grown locally and is in season. This is the best way to eat sustainability!

  • Purchase meat, eggs, and cheese at local places (including farmers markets)
    • These animal products tend to be raised more humanely and sustainably. You can also talk to the farmers themselves to know more about their practices and maybe even check out the farm yourself!

  • Eat at local restaurants. Local restaurants tend to support other local businesses.
    • This means they tend to purchase meat, seafood, and produce locally. This is good for your body, good for the economy, and good for the environment!

Knowing where your food comes from, you can actually thank those who grew the food.

Your food is extremely fresh, full of fresh nutrients, and flavor.

It’s good for your body and the environment!

Yes, this food may be higher priced, but it is well worth it to be able to thank the farmer, feel good about where you bought your food, and know you’re supporting someone local.

Limit single use plastic

  • It’s challenging now with the way the world is, but where you can, bring your own cup to coffee shops to limit the use of plastic cups.
  • Ask for no straw in your drink when you eat out.
  • Use your own utensils when you get food to go.
  • Reuse to go containers.

Do your part to save the planet!

No more food waste! (And that means not wasting food in your body)

  • Utilize leftovers!
    • If you’re someone who doesn’t like leftovers, recook food in a skillet so that it can take on a new flavor and tastes fresh.

  • Put smaller food portions on your plate—don’t waste food in your body!
    • Many of us have the mentality of “cleaning your plate” to not waste food. However, if you’re just eating everything on your plate for that reason, you are wasting the food in your body.
    • Put the leftover food on your plate in a container to eat later.

Be mindful of how much food you put on your plate and in your body. Don’t waste it!

Know your hunger levels: based on that level, only eat as much as your body wants.

Stop eating when you’re full and put leftovers in the fridge to eat later. Be mindful of what your body needs!

Eat seasonal food

  • Choose to eat foods that are in season.
    • Grocery stores sell all types of produce year-round by that doesn’t mean they are in season.
    • Seasonal food not only tastes better, but its better for the environment!
